Ignatius "Iggy" Emmerson Gardiner, age 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 18, 2021, at the Oromocto Public Hospital.
Born in Gardiner Mines, N.S., he was the son of the late Ronald and Josephine (Strang) Gardiner. Iggy left Gardiner Mines where he worked as a miner for 12 years to join the military and make Oromocto his home. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1956 to 1981.
Iggy is survived by Maxine Gullison (long-time Partner); three sons, Leslie (Pat) Gardiner, Iggy (Lina) Gardiner and Blair (Sandra) Gardiner; grandchildren, Laural, Tracy (Roger), Scott (Kristy), Iggy (Annie), Jordana (Dane), Amanda (Kirk) and Chris (Laura); great grandchildren, Ryan, Hanna, Nicholas, Tristan, Andréa, Scarlett, Émilie, Gus, Violet and Hazel. Granddad loved his family and he always had time for each and every one.
He was predeceased by his parents and his wife of 57 years, Marion (Grace) Gardiner; brothers Frank, Andrew and John and his sister Mary.
Iggy was a member of the Fredericton Royal Canadian Legion where he and Maxine loved playing shuffle board in tournaments. Their freezer was often full of goodies won at competitions.
Iggy was a wonderful man, grandfather and great-grandfather. He made a significant mark in the lives of those who knew him and loved him. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
A private family service will be held at a later date.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the N.B. Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Special thanks to Dr. Snell, the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital staff, Dr. Kennedy and the nurses and staff of the Oromocto Public Hospital Med 1 for the exceptional care and compassion he received.
