Alexander (Alex) Hillier
December 27, 1935 - October 18, 2024
It is with the heaviest of hearts that we, the family of Alex Hillier, announce his passing at the Doctor Everett Chalmers Hospital on Friday, October 18, 2024.
Alex was born December 27, 1935, in North Sydney, NS, to Ernest and Lucy (Crews) Hillier. He was a man of faith and a proud Cape Bretoner. He was also very proud of his family and his 26 years of service with the Artillery in the Canadian Forces. He had many stories and made many friends which remained through his life. Alex and Amelia retired back to Cape Breton in Big Bras D'or in 1979, where Alex operated a school bus for 18 years.
Alex loved sports, especially hockey. He played with the Gagetown Warriors for many years and played Old Timers Hockey in Cape Breton. He also enjoyed coaching with the Oromocto Minor Hockey League and enjoyed a round of golf when he could.
Alex is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Amelia (Millie) (Cavanaugh); his five children Sharon Hillier (Earle Banks) Fredericton, Nancy Cashin (Neil) Lincoln, Brenda Ames (David) Grande Prairie, AB; Cheryl Hogan (Ed) Geary; and Alexander (Sandy ) Hillier (Tammy), Edmonton, AB; his grandchildren Sean Banks (Kate); Kathleen Banks (Ronan); Jordan Stewart (Danielle); Ryan Cashin; Curtis Ames (Leah); Darren Ames, Kimberley Ames, Haley Ames (Mario); Jennifer Hogan (Jordan Harris); Meghan, Skylar, and Jayden Hillier; and his great grandchildren Connor and Ethan Banks, Deven, Alexis, and Nicholas Stewart; Campbell Harris and Wyatt Ames; his brothers Joe Hillier (Pearl); Ernest Hillier (Betty); his sisters Mary Bragg; Lil Dolomont (Bob); Lyn Ballam (Bob); Sharon Lantz (Hector); his brother-in-law Wayne Cavanaugh (Camillus); sisters-in-law Betty Hillier and Wanda Hollywood plus numerous nieces and nephews.
Alex was predeceased by his parents, his mother and father-in-law Everett and Alice Cavanaugh, his brothers Clyde, Howard, and Maurice Hillier; sisters Cora Hillier, Meta Casey, Pearl McDonald, and Daisy Noble; brother and sister-in-law Clifford and Patricia Cavanaugh; brother's-in-law Maurice Casey, Raymond McDonald, Edward Noble, Nelson Bragg and Vic Hollywood; and his very special nephew Douglas McDonald.
We thank all the Doctors and staff of 3 East at the DECH; his family physician, Doctor Paulin, and Nurse Practitioner Tania Lanteigne for the exceptional care they provided to our dad.
Visitation will be held at Oromocto Funeral Home on Wednesday, October 23, 4:00-7:00 pm with a Legion Tribute at 6:30 pm.
