Obituary of Harry Hoyt Pickett

The death of Harry Pickett occurred on July 2nd, 2021 at Hospice House Fredericton. Born in Newcastle Creek on April 15th, 1935, he was the oldest son of the late Byron and Frances (Dickson/Dixon) Pickett and dearly loved husband of Eleanor (Rand) Pickett. In addition to his parents, Harry was predeceased by his sisters Marguerite and Shirley. Besides his wife, he will be especially missed by his sister Dorothy (Dr. Jack Casey), his brother Edward (Lorraine Bruce), and several nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart. His early schooling was in Newcastle Creek and Minto High. After graduating high school, he worked for two years as the chemical analyst at the NB Power plant in Newcastle Creek, which helped fund his university education at Acadia University, graduating in 1959 and with his BEd in 1961. On June 29th, 1963, he and Eleanor began their 58 years of married life together by teaching in Waterloo, Quebec where he successfully led his students in entering history projects in the provincial contest and was elated when they won a coveted prize for their school. Two years of being the principal of the elementary and junior high in Mont Apica, brought the adventure of living on an isolated radar station in the Laurentide Park of Quebec where the ski hill was especially enjoyed. He was also a skilled bowler who won trophies whenever and wherever he played. He was considered an outstanding, versatile and respected colleague at the English School in CFB Bagotville, one who lent his expertise to the community as a principal and teacher maintaining high quality education. In all fields of work he succeed brilliantly. After retiring and moving back to New Brunswick, many pleasant summer days were enjoyed at his camp on the Grand Lake at Scotchtown. It became a therapeutic retreat where he enjoyed what nature provided. Harry struggled against many serious illnesses in the last years but always maintained a positive outlook, accepting his difficulties with grace, dignity and a deep faith that all was in the care of his loving heavenly father. A memorial service will be held at Oromocto Baptist Church on Friday, July 9th, 2021 at 2:30 pm. Due to the current health restrictions, there will be limited seating.
