Obituary of W. Scott Harris

It is great sadness that the family announces the death of W. Scott Harris, formerly of Burton, NB, at the Veteran’s Health Unit, Fredericton, NB on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 after a brief illness. He was the son of the late James and Hilda (Shephard) Harris and husband of Charrie (Haines) Harris. He is survived by his wife, Charrie and his children, Angie (Marty), Mark (Gina), Janet (Paul) and Todd (Susan), grandchildren Jessica (Chris), Ryan (Dawna), Lindsay (Ryan), Jordan, Justin, Joe, Alexis, Emma and Abby, five great-grandchildren, his brothers Ralph and Dale and brother-in-law Fred Haines, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Sidney, and his sister-in-law Juanita Haines. Scott was born on January 27, 1930 in Barker’s Point where he grew up. Many of the stories he told were recollections of swimming in the Nashwaak, raising rabbits and hunting with his brothers. He served in the military for twenty-six years, which included the Korean War, Germany and Egypt. When he retired from the military he continued to work at CFB Gagetown with Base Supply for a further fourteen years. Dad enjoyed hunting and fishing in his spare time. He loved getting out in the woods and was a master fisher (much to the amazement of his children) when they accompanied him. He particularly enjoyed getting out on the ‘Moose Hunt’ where he could be counted on to keep all entertained with his hunting stories of days gone by. His sense of humor and sarcastic wit was evident to all who met him even during his last few days. Dad was an avid card player, woe to the novice partner in the hunting camp who should have led with trump. He also had an extensive garden and apple orchard and could be counted on for advice on how and when to plant vegetables. He made it a personal mission to protect his gardens from all ‘intruders’. Dad also kept busy by working with his hands; he built all manner of lawn furniture particularly rounded top garbage bins which can be found far and wide along the roads of New Brunswick. He was an avid reader; enjoying westerns and espionage. Dad was always willing to help anyone with anything they needed. We will miss him. The family of Scott would like to thank Dr. Snell, Dr. Reid at OPH, Dr. Keddy, Dr. Roberts and the nurses and staff of the Veteran’s Health Unit for their tender and compassionate care during his illness. Visitation for Scott will be held at the Oromocto Funeral home on Wednesday, August 1, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A graveside service will take place in the Oromocto Pioneer Gardens Cemetery on Thursday, August 2 at 10 am, officiated by Reverend Bob Jones. Reception to follow at the Oromocto Funeral Home after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes in Scott’s honor may be made to the SPCA, the Oromocto Legion or the Oromocto Food Bank.
