Obituary of Paul Herman Schippel

Paul Herman Schippel, age 103, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2024, with family by his side. Paul was born in Windischholzhausen, Germany on December 17, 1920.

He was predeceased by wife Erna (May), daughter Juanita (Schippel) Gaudet, his parents Otto and Frieda (Schraddich), brothers Helmut and Walter, and sister Herta. Paul is survived by granddaughters Alesha Gaudet (Scott Rawlins) and Ashley Gaudet, his three great-grandchildren Gavin and Gabriell Gaudet and Hardy Gaudet, son-in-law Hardy Gaudet and niece Anita Kobis.

Paul grew up in Germany and was a soldier in WWII. He spent some time in an American Prison of War camp. Post-war, he worked in different places such as Saudi Arabia. On April 7, 1955, he married Erna May, and later that year immigrated to Canada. They settled in St. Jean, Quebec, where his only daughter, Juantia Schippel, was born April 28, 1958. Having worked in metal fabrication his employment brought him to Oromocto, NB, around 1974, where he would live out the remainder of his life.

Paul, or Opa, as most people referred to him, will be remembered for his generosity, his love of dark chocolate and routine. For many years, Paul walked the Deer Park nature trails daily and bowled weekly. Paul was known to dance a jig to impress people with how nimble he was for “an old man”. Paul lived the last three years in Enhanced Living Oromocto where he was treated “like a King” and loved being a role model to all the younger folks.

The family would like to express extreme gratitude to the staff at Enhanced Living Oromocto for the care and kindness shown to Paul and the family over the years. A small private graveside service will be held next week. Donations can be made in Paul’s memory to Oromocto SPCA or Oromocto Food Bank.
