Obituary of Richard Lee Foster

It is with great sadness that the family of Richard Foster announces his death at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Saturday, January 20, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, on April 16, 1945, he was the husband of Jo Ann Foster of Maugerville.

In addition to his wife Jo Ann, Richard leaves behind his stepdaughters, Stephanie (Danny), and Melissa (Davey); sister, Nancy Ackerson (Paul); grandchildren, Tyler, Austin (Kayla), Emma, and Vanessa; great-granddaughter, Aaliyah, as well as many cousins and extended family members.  He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Terry Gilbert (Cathy), and sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Barker (Galane), and Debbie Tulk (Peter).

Richard was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Mary (MacAfee) Foster; brother, Berton, and brother-in-law, Dan Gilbert (Deb).

Richard farmed his entire life as a 5th generation farmer, together with his brother Berton. Their main industries were beef cattle, as well as vegetable wholesale production. They also ran a roadside vegetable stand - especially known for their vegetable U-Pick. Customers travelled near and far for over 30 years to attend the U-Pick and Foster’s Vegetable Stand with the gorgeous view of the Wolastoq River.

Richard was a staple at the Boyce Farmers Market for many years. He truly enjoyed his seasonal weekly treks to the market. This was his “social time”, catching up on the news with other vendors and customers alike.

Those who knew Richard well, know how much he loved to be in his tractor. With stereotypical farmer resilience and determination, Richard did indeed drive his tractor until a few short months ago.

Richard enjoyed his lengthy chats with friends, neighbors, customers, and staff.  He liked to tease his workers from time to time, and he always appreciated the long hours and hard work they contributed to the farm. He remembered them fondly, passing on anecdotes of their farming adventures.

The family would like to extend their thanks to the Oromocto Extra Mural program, nursing staff of 4SW at the DECH, and special thanks to Dr. Boisvert.

Visitation will be held at Oromocto Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, from 4pm -7pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 2 pm, with Fr. Charles Udeh as celebrant. Interment will take place in the St. Vincent de Paul Church Cemetery in the spring. For those who wish, donations in Richard’s memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Association, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
