He was a gem, and I am so very thankful to have had him as a teacher when I was in grade 11, as a fellow educator at OHS for several years and to experience his quiet leadership by example. Words often do not seem enough at times like this, but treasure those happy memories of an amazing man in the days and family times ahead. Sending my warmest condolences.

Edwin was my cousin. My family lived in Halifax and in my early years it was taken for granted that I would spend my summers up the Saint John River at my Aunt Jessie’s and Uncle Lee’s farm with my cousins “Freddie and Edwin”. There I was entrusted with serious responsibilities such as feeding milk to the calves, feeding the pigs and frightfully collecting eggs from angry hens. But the Welch family also bestowed on me tremendous trust for while we hayed ,I at only 12 years old got to drive the tractor pulling a hay wagon while my cousins road behind on the wagon. My days of summer with Freddie and Edwin were filled with learning. I had access to Men’s Only Magazines hidden under my cousins mattresses, I had my first cigarette lying flat on top of the chicken coop out of sight of my Aunt and Uncle. We occasionally went for late night drives looking for friends of Freddie and Edwins’ who I was told owed then bottles of beer. I was their student and I to this day cherish the time I spent in their company. Edwin I saw as more of a serious student, a little more reserved but easily laughed something like tee hee hee hee. Vivid in my memory for the last 50 years and more. I loved my cousin Edwin, and I thank him for the time he invested in me . A kind ,gentle soul, God bless him . Bert Marshall
